When we first saw Franklands, both Ben and I could see the potential it had although we knew it wouldn’t be a quick or easy job. We interviewed four RIBA architects. Kate was the only one who brought along a builder that she works with regularly and we thought this was a good idea as it meant we had another professional to question about costs and time scale etc. Kate also arranged for us to see some of her other work in progress so we could see how the process would unfold – viewing the dust and mess prepared us for what would become our everyday life for several months. Kate’s ideas matched our ideas of what we wanted our home to become and she allowed for several changes along the way – and seemed pretty unflappable at our requests – and there were quite a few!

Modern renovation and extension in Berkshire undo years of poor planning

This handsome 1930’s villa was in much need of TLC. The home  suffered from endless small spaces, dark interiors and poorly designed extensions.

In order to help the homeowners fall in love with their house, Absolute Architecture  stripped back the interior and exterior to really freshen up the space and add a contemporary flair and light touch. We opened up space with a double height hallway, converted garages and designed a detached studio and games room with an outdoor hydro pool.

Location:  Pangbourne, Berkshire

Materials: A simple exterior palette combined white render and dark grey aluminium windows. The interiors were kept simple with a white contemporary kitchen and large format polished concrete floor slabs.

Clever aspects: For this home we had to really think about how we could strip back all of terrible interventions done over the years and strategically connect the building back together.

Friends on the project:

The client self-project managed this Pangbourne extension and we were on hand to provide advice and assistance as needed. Key contractors and suppliers were:

  • Espresso did the kitchen
  • Hydropool provided the swim spa.

We love: Our favourite thing about this home renovation is the simple fact that it is now a light, fresh and contemporary property. It also is designed to provide the family with plenty of leisure opportunities and memories.
