WWe chose Absolute Architecture because they really listened to us. Kate interpreted our requirements within a really innovative scheme to give us the family home we always wanted. Other architects made suggestions without taking into account our actual needs. This didn’t inspire us with confidence that a house stuck in a fifties time warp could be transformed into one fit for 21st century living. Kate has also been with us through every step of our build and has taken away the many stresses that it can bring. We are extremely happy with the personal yet professional way that our project has been handled and would have no hesitation in recommending the Absolute Architecture team. We now have a home which is unique, stylish and exactly what we had hoped for.

Interior design and a clever extension transform this 1950s Berkshire home

This 1950’s house was virtually derelict but set in a fantastic, rural location in Berkshire. However, despite its rural location, the plot was very singular in aspect and the homeowners wanted better privacy.

Absolute Architecture re-planned the interior so that the living spaces were private and opened onto the garden. The interiors were opened up with a new spacious hallway extension and a galleried library landing.

Location: Ashmore Green, Berkshire

Materials: The house was rendered with a new aluminium roof and timber/aluminium composite windows. A landscaped patio in black limestone completes the pavilion style setting.

Clever aspects: The house was reinsulated externally to eliminate all the 1950s cold bridging. The space planning works cleverly here to create a free-flowing sense of space. A double sided wood burner and the home’s glass doors create visual links between rooms.

Friends on the project: These were key suppliers and partners for this residential home:

  • Calco Construction, who built this gorgeous home
  • Rivar, who supplied the black limestone
  • Firebelly Stove, who provided the double-sided stove.

We love:  This house on a warm, sunny day – when all the doors are open becomes a magical space as the inside and outside truly blur into one.
